You and I will do well to believe his report

The word of the Lord surely does not fall to the ground. It does not return to him void, it will accomplish everything that he has sent it to do. Not only that, but it will also prosper in that thing.

Isaiah 55: 10 – 11 (NKJV) “10 “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there,But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, 11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

Isaiah prophesied almost seven hundred years before Jesus was born.  The word he spoke was not a speculation or a hopeful word. Isaiah spoke his word as a historian would about events that occurred in his presence or in the past. He was giving a historical account of future events.

He wrote about Jesus before he was born.

Isaiah 9:6-7 (NKJV) “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There  will  be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”

Consider the following pericope,

Isaiah 53:1-12 (NKJV) “Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There  is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was  wounded for our transgressions, He  was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was  any  deceit in His mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.”

It lays bare such a detailed summary of the life of our Lord, the High Priest of our confession and the Captain of our salvation. It truly serves to  let us know that he was hearing from the Lord as we are living after the fulfillment of these words.

You can trust everything that Isaiah spoke.

Isaiah was not writing a prophetic word for money or notoriety, but what the Lord had showed him. Oh how sweet and comforting it is when the true prophets speak.

The question that Isaiah posses,

Isaiah 53:1 (a)  (NKJV) “Who has believed our report?”,

is astonishing as well, he was not asking about “who will”, as looking into the future  but “who has”, a past report. My pastor puts it this way

“Isaiah was writing today’s headlines for our generation”

You and I will do well to believe his report, as we live years after this prophecy was fulfilled.
