The Blessing of Obededom

2 Samuel 6:11 (AMP) “And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.”

4 Obed-edom had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth,
5 Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peullethai the eighth; for God blessed him.
6 Also to Shemaiah his son were sons born, who were rulers in their fathers’ houses, for they were mighty men of ability and courage.
7 The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad, whose brethren were strong and able men, Elihu and Semachiah.
8 All these were sons of Obed-edom [in whose house the ark was kept], with their sons and brethren, strong and able men for the service—sixty-two in all.

2 Samuel 6:10-12 (AMP)
10 So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord to him into the City of David; but he took it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
11 And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.
12 And it was told King David, The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the City of David with rejoicing;

Etymology of the name Obed-edom

The name Obed-edom obviously consists of two separate elements:

  1. The first part of the name Obed-edom comes from the root עבד (abad), meaning servant or to serve:
  2. The second part of the name Obed-edom comes from the root אדם (‘dm), meaning either mankind or ruddy, or refers to Edom:

The name of two biblical figures.

  1. The Gittite
    • to whose house the *Ark of the Lord was transferred after the death of Uzzah (II Sam. 6:10ff.; I Chron. 13:13–14).
    • In order to prevent further calamities, the Ark was brought to the house of Obed-Edom, which was apparently situated between Kiriath-Jearim and Jerusalem.
  2. A descendant of Obed-Edom the Gittite,
    • who was in charge of the gold, the silver, and all the vessels in the Temple in Jerusalem in the days of Amaziah king of Judah (798–769 B.C.E.; II Chron. 25:24).

The Blessing of Obed-Edom
The Ark of the covenant – the presence of God – was in his household for three months

Willingness to bring the Ark in

  • Obededom was willing to take the Ark into his house.
  • When others rejected it because of the plagues, he was willing as a faithful priest to accept it.
  • People may be fearful of God’s presence but we should embrace his presence

 

Willingness to move

  • Obededom was willing to move with God on into David’s Tabernacle.

Positioned

  • Obededom was appointed to be amongst the musicians in the order of worship in David’s Tabernacle in Zion (1 Chronicles 15:21, 16:5,38)
  • The Lord blessed him in a greater way

 

The View of His blessing

  • If you regard him as a Levite then the blessing becomes that of restoration that means having the presence of God in your life will bring restoration not only for you but for generations
  • If you regard him as a gentile it becomes a blessing of elevation and inclusion into the commonwealth of Israel. Not only for you but for generations

 

Generations

  • It was such a tremendous blessing not just on him but also his household
  • Obededom was blessed with 8 sons from whom came mighty men of valor, strong for the service of the Lord. These were in the divisions of the gatekeepers (1 Chronicles 26:4-8)
  • 8 the number of new beginnings
  • Its amazing how one decision can change the course of multiple generations

 

People noticed

  • for it was told unto David.
  • It was the presence of the Ark or the presence of God
  • that was attributed as the causation of his new state of being blessed
