It is because of unbelief that we do not have a manifestation of the Holy Spirit or gifts of the Holy Spirit. We have collaborated with our unbelief to justify cessation. We use writings and reasoning of some of our fathers of old as evidential support for our position, thus making them a greater authority than the Holy Spirit himself. Not disparaging the works of old, it is better to trust the Holy Spirit than the writings of men. Jesus himself said the Spirit will lead us into all truth. Some of their writings were written in a time when unbelief was normal, like today, and because they neither saw nor experienced the supernatural they concluded that cessation was the correct ‘doctrine’.
