Luke 4:3 (NKJV) And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
I John 5:5-8 (NKJV) Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
You do not have to turn stone into bread to prove your identity as a child of God! These are the three things that bear witness, the Spirit, the water, and the blood. Not the act of turning stones into bread! Interesting, especially (had to use that word ‘especially’ for my Zimbabwean friends), in light of the following verse:
John 10:25 (NKJV) “Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me.””
Context matters
Works are bearing witness too! Well consider the context of his works ‘the works that I do in My Father’s name’. I know who my daddy is. I know who I am. I do not do these works in my name but in his.
So turning stones into bread was not going to be a work done in the Father’s name! Furthermore, Jesus was not sent to prove to Satan that he is the Son of God.
A cursory reading of scripture proves that point. Just in case you doubt, let me narrow the scope of your search by asking you to consider reading John 17 to see what Jesus declared as his assignment from the Father.
As a bonus observation point,
Matthew 7:22-23 (NKJV) “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’”
To put the above pericope into the context of our discussion allow me to rephrase it this way!
‘Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and we even turned stones into bread in your name?’
Workers of lawlessness
Well, well, well, all one can say is this
NEVER TURN STONES INTO BREAD otherwise you will also be classified amongst those who practice lawlessness.
Be on the lookout for the next portion of this series when we explore the hunger part of the first verse mentioned at the beginning of this mentation
