Matthew 5:14 (KJV) “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
He is the father of lights
James 1:17 (KJV) “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
God commanded his light to shine
2 Corinthians 4:6 (KJV) “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
There is a purpose for the light
Matthew 5:15 (KJV) “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.”
Isaiah 42:6 (KJV) “I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;”
Matthew 5:16 (KJV) “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
We have a great responsibility in this verse – to let our light shine! We have to give the light permission to shine.
There is a purpose for your light to shine
1. that your good works may be seen
2. that your father in heaven may be glorified
We want darkness to hid our works but we were created for good works
We should contemplate these questions today.
- When our light shines what works are seen
- who will be glorified when people see our good works
Often times we want people to see our good works not that God may be glorified but that people may speak highly of our tenacity, hard work, our wisdom, our creativity leaving no room for God to be glorified
