Have you ever been asked a question that stopped you in your tracks? One that pierced through all your defenses and landed squarely in the center of your heart? Jesus had a way of asking such questions, and perhaps none more penetrating than the four words He spoke to His disciples in Luke 8:25: “Where is your faith?”
Picture the scene: waves crashing over the boat, water filling the hull, seasoned fishermen certain they’re about to die. And there’s Jesus, sleeping peacefully through the storm. When they wake Him in panic, He calms the wind and waves with a word. Then comes the question that should make us all pause: “Where is your faith?”
This isn’t just a story about a storm on a lake two thousand years ago. It’s about the storms you and I face today—the unexpected diagnosis, the financial crisis, the relationship that’s falling apart, the dreams that seem to be drowning. In these moments, Jesus asks us the same question: “Where is your faith?”
Welcome to Our Journey Together
Over the next three articles, we’re going to explore this profound question that has the power to transform not just how we view our circumstances, but how we understand our entire relationship with God. We’ll discover that faith isn’t just something we possess—it’s something that possesses us when we understand its true source and purpose.
In our first exploration today, we’ll uncover why this question matters so much and how it reveals God’s heart for our spiritual growth. Next week, we’ll dive deep into understanding faith as God designed it from the very beginning. Finally, we’ll discover how to cultivate the kind of faith that not only pleases God but transforms our daily lives and the lives of those around us.
The question “Where is your faith?” isn’t meant to condemn us—it’s meant to awaken us to possibilities we’ve never imagined.
When God Looks for Faith
Here’s what strikes me about Jesus’ question: He’s not asking if we have faith. He’s asking where it is. The assumption is that faith exists within us—God has placed it there. But where is it in the moment we need it most?
Think about it this way: you don’t lose your keys because they cease to exist. You lose them because they’re not where you expected them to be when you need them. Faith can be the same way. God has given every believer faith (Romans 12:3), but sometimes we can’t find it when the storms hit.
The disciples had faith—they’d left everything to follow Jesus. They’d seen Him heal the sick and cast out demons. But when the waves rose and the wind howled, their faith seemed to vanish like morning mist. Sound familiar?
“Faith is not the absence of doubt—it’s the presence of trust in the midst of uncertainty.”
The Author and Finisher
Hebrews 12:2 gives us a crucial insight: Jesus is “the author and finisher of our faith.” This changes everything. Faith isn’t something we manufacture through positive thinking or emotional manipulation. Faith isn’t something we work up or conjure through sheer willpower. Faith is God’s idea, God’s gift, and God’s work in us.
When we understand that Jesus is the author of our faith, it takes the pressure off. We’re not responsible for creating faith from nothing—we’re responsible for nurturing and expressing the faith He’s already authored within us. When we grasp that He’s also the finisher of our faith, we can trust that what He begins, He completes.
This is liberating news for those of us who sometimes feel like spiritual failures when our faith wavers. You’re not disqualified because you’ve had doubts. You’re not rejected because you’ve questioned God in difficult times. The One who started your faith journey is committed to seeing it through to completion.
From the Garden to Your Heart
Scripture tells us that faith was present and perfect in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve walked with God in perfect trust, without fear or doubt clouding their relationship with their Creator. Faith wasn’t something they had to work at—it was the natural state of being in right relationship with God.
When sin entered the picture, that perfect faith was damaged but not destroyed. Throughout history, God has been working to restore that Eden-like trust in the hearts of His people. Your faith journey is part of that grand restoration project.
Every time you choose to trust God despite your circumstances, you’re participating in the restoration of Eden. Every time you believe His promises when everything around you suggests otherwise, you’re allowing Him to rebuild that original design for faith in your life.
The Faith That Moves Mountains
Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains (Matthew 17:20). Notice He didn’t say faith the size of a mountain can move mustard seeds. It’s not about the quantity of faith—it’s about the quality and the object of that faith.
The disciples’ problem wasn’t that they had too little faith. Their problem was that their faith was in the wrong place. They were trusting in their own experience as fishermen rather than in the One who created the sea. They were focusing on the storm rather than on the Storm-Calmer.
Where is your faith today? Is it in your bank account, your health, your relationships, your own abilities? Or is it anchored in the One who spoke the worlds into existence and holds all things together by the word of His power?
“The size of your faith matters less than the size of your God.”
A Living, Growing Reality
Faith isn’t a static thing—it’s alive and dynamic. Just as a muscle grows stronger with exercise, faith develops through use. Every time you trust God in small things, you’re preparing for the larger tests that will come.
The beautiful truth is that God doesn’t waste our struggles. Every storm you weather with Him builds your faith for the next one. Every mountain you see Him move increases your confidence that He can move the next one. Your current challenge isn’t just about your present circumstance—it’s about preparing you for future victories.
But here’s what many of us miss: faith isn’t just for our benefit. God responds to faith not because He needs our faith to act, but because faith creates the environment where His power can be displayed for others to see. When you trust God in impossible circumstances, you become a billboard for His faithfulness.
The Question That Changes Us
“Where is your faith?” This question isn’t designed to shame us—it’s designed to shape us. It calls us to examine where we’ve placed our ultimate trust and whether that trust is well-founded.
Perhaps your faith is buried under disappointment from unanswered prayers. Maybe it’s hidden beneath fear of future unknowns. Or possibly it’s misplaced—invested in things that are temporary rather than in the One who is eternal.
The good news is that even misplaced faith can be relocated. Even buried faith can be resurrected. Even weak faith can be strengthened. Because the One asking the question is the same One who authors and finishes our faith.
Your Invitation to Journey Deeper
As we conclude this first exploration, I want to invite you into a posture of honest reflection. Jesus’ question to His disciples is His question to you: “Where is your faith?” Don’t rush to answer. Sit with the question. Let it search your heart.
In our next article, we’ll explore how faith was God’s original design from the very beginning and how that understanding can revolutionize your relationship with Him. We’ll discover that faith isn’t just something we need—it’s something God delights in.
What if the very thing that challenges your faith today is actually God’s invitation to discover faith at a deeper level?
Take a moment right now to honestly assess where your faith is. Is it active and vibrant, or has it been dormant? Is it anchored in God’s character and promises, or is it dependent on your circumstances? Write down your thoughts, share them with a trusted friend, or bring them to God in prayer.
Remember, He’s not asking this question to condemn you but to awaken you to the incredible life of faith He has in store. The storm may be real, but the Storm-Calmer is in your boat.
