Definition

There is a progression in life that is common to all humanity. We are born and we will some day go by the way of the grave. Between birth and death is what we have deemed life. An opportunity to write history. The history we write will be for those graced or cursed to be our posterity.

During life, we create definition. This is who we will be remembered in history as. In my contemplations a question that all must answer presented itself.

What will my definition be?

When the final act of our lives is done and the grave has embraced us we won’t be able to change the answer to it. The answer is one that our posterity will live with. Will they be ashamed of the definition we wrote in time.

I have, through history and learning, known many who, in their minds, distinguished themselves yet in this definition they are not celebrated. Their posterity regards them as a curse and a stain on the bloodline. Their living wrote shame, ignorance, betrayal, and hatred as definitions. The name Quisling comes to mind! You might not be familiar with him so other names come to mind but for now Nabal the fool!

When the rest of our posterity reads our definition, will they be ashamed or will they rejoice? Will they be forced to spend their lives hiding, redefining, or running away from this definition?

Be careful because you will not be able to redeem or redefine what you wrote in your days.

When time unveils your definition -the meaning of your life- you will not be there to mount a social media campaign to dispute it. You will not be there to hire a public media consultant to rewrite it. Furthermore, you will not be there to advocate or appeal for a redefinition. The beauty of your tombstone won’t be able to rewrite this definition either.

You won’t be able to tweet, post, #hashtag or add to your timeline when you are in the grave

Your posterity may do well in hiding or running away from this definition. But, when judgment day comes, time- the faithful scribe and historian- will unveil all your works as the evidence of definition. The final punctuation of your definition will be either hell or paradise.

Live a definition that won’t need alteration when truth challenges it and your posterity has to live with it.
